An increasing number of campers are looking for greater comfort and privacy when using toilets and showers.

• More than 1 in 10 campsites now offer private toilet and shower facilities.
• At 16% of campsites in the Netherlands, private toilet and shower facilities are available directly on the camping pitch.

Following its annual survey of approximately 10,000 campsites across Europe, camping specialist ACSI has concluded that the number of campsites offering private toilet and shower facilities has increased by more than 20% since the beginning of 2024.

Private showers and toilets can now be reserved at more than 1 in 10 campsites, with the Netherlands leading this development.

Every year, ACSI’s 400 inspection teams map the facilities available at campsites throughout Europe. This information is published in ACSI’s well-known green campsite guides, mobile applications and online platforms such as Eurocampings.eu.

By mid-March, private toilet and shower facilities could be reserved at 1,018 of the 9,853 inspected locations. On 1 January 2024, this was possible at 834 campsites, representing an increase of 21% in just over a year.

Approximately half of these campsites provide guests with access to a private shower and/or toilet within a communal sanitary building. The other half offer private toilet and shower units directly on individual camping pitches.

Private sanitary facilities located next to caravans or tents are especially popular at campsites in France and the Netherlands. Reserved private facilities within central sanitary buildings are more common in Italy and Germany.

The Netherlands Is Leading the Way Ramon van Reine, Director of camping specialist ACSI, explains: “Camping is naturally a very authentic form of holiday, but that does not mean campers have to give up all forms of comfort. A growing number of campers are looking for more luxury and, for example, no longer want to walk around the campsite wearing a bathrobe.

Campsite owners are increasingly responding to this demand by offering additional facilities.

Dutch campsites in particular are currently setting the standard when it comes to private toilet and shower facilities located directly on the camping pitch.” Of the 1,066 campsites inspected by ACSI in the Netherlands,

171 currently offer private sanitary facilities directly on the camping pitch. This represents 16% of all inspected Dutch campsites. Despite these developments, guests are still required to bring their own toilet paper at 1 in 5 European campsites.

This requirement applies at more than half of the campsites inspected by ACSI in Italy and at almost 40% of inspected campsites in France. In Scandinavia, however, guests are almost never required to bring their own toilet paper.

In addition, 10% of European campsites still have the much-dreaded squat toilets. These are found almost exclusively at campsites in France and Italy.

Private Sanitary Facilities with an Infrared Sauna Recreatiepark de Leistert, located in Roggel in the Central Limburg region of the Netherlands, was named the Best Campsite in the Netherlands in the 2024 ACSI Awards.

Today, guests can even reserve camping pitches equipped with their own private sanitary facilities. These heated units include not only a private shower and toilet, but may also be equipped with a dishwasher, refrigerator or infrared sauna.

Angelique Joosten, Director of Recreatiepark de Leistert, says: “At De Leistert, we aim to provide the best possible facilities for a carefree and unforgettable camping holiday. Naturally, we also offer standard camping pitches.

However, with pitches equipped with private toilet and shower facilities, guests no longer need to walk to a central sanitary building in the middle of the night or wait in their bathrobes for a shower cubicle to become available.

These pitches have a minimum area of 130 square metres and include a 16-amp electricity connection, water supply and wastewater drainage, as well as a cable television connection for guests who bring their own television.”
