Alessandro Sgaravatti, CEO of Union Lido, one of Europe’s leading open-air tourism resorts, has stated that demand for private bathrooms at campsites has increased significantly, particularly since the pandemic, and that this is not a temporary trend.
In an interview with Camping Business, Sgaravatti explained that, if land and space limitations did not exist, he would prefer to maintain the current number of guests at Union Lido Mare while creating larger camping pitches rather than increasing accommodation capacity.
He also said that he would add more private bathrooms, emphasising that demand for private sanitary facilities is continuing to grow and has become a long-term trend within the industry. Union Lido has already begun responding to this demand by offering private bathrooms on selected premium camping pitches.
Some premium pitches located close to the beach provide guests with bathrooms reserved exclusively for their own use. Access to these facilities is controlled through electronic wristbands issued to guests. The company’s new five-star thermal camping and spa project in Montegrotto also demonstrates the growing importance of private sanitary facilities.
At the planned Union Lido Terme resort, every camping pitch will have its own private bathroom. Some pitches will also include private thermal pools. The project is intended to operate throughout the year and will focus on comfort, privacy and high-quality open-air accommodation.
According to Sgaravatti, four- and five-star campsites should refocus on the elements that guests consider to be genuine luxury in outdoor tourism.
Rather than decorative excess, this means larger camping pitches, high-quality toilet and shower facilities, greater privacy and consistently strong service standards.
His comments indicate that campers want to remain close to nature without giving up comfort and personal space. Private bathrooms and toilets are therefore moving beyond their role as optional premium services and are becoming key features of new campsite investments and higher-value camping pitches.
